The Department of Civil Engineering at MVJCE organized an industrial visit to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) in Yelahanka, Bangalore, on Wednesday, 18/10/2023. The final-year undergraduate and first-year postgraduate (structures) students participated in the visit. The students were accompanied by faculty members Prof. Vidhya Carmel, Prof. Karthik S, and Dr. Kasi Rekha. The main objective of the visit was to provide students with practical field experience in various aspects of civil engineering.
During the visit, Mr. Varadaraju B. L, a structural consultant for Yelahanka Junction, explained site exploration, the need for traffic control, connectivity in busy areas, soil testing, bar bending and scheduling, pile driving, casing, and precautions taken during pile erection. Furthermore, the students visited the casting yard, where they gained practical experience in casting PSC (Pre-Stressed Concrete) elements. Mr. Varadaraju B. L and his team explained reinforcement details, fabrication of structures, quality testing of materials, and the construction of PSC girders according to the provided drawings.
The concepts covered during the visit included materials used, quality control and testing practices, the use of total stations, precast elements, modern equipment usage, reinforcement detailing, piling, component erection, site safety, and management. Overall, the students enjoyed their visit to the metro and were able to relate their experiences to the theoretical concepts.
