A Workshop on ‘Total Station and Advanced Survey Lab Equipment’ was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering under the banner of IQAC, MVJCE, from 28th December 2021 to 30th December 2021, in Seminar Hall 6, maintaining the SOPs relating to covid. 145 students and 18 faculty members from the Civil Engineering Department participated in this Workshop.
The planning and design of all Civil Engineering projects such as construction of Highways, Bridges, Tunnels, Dams etc., are based upon surveying measurements. Surveying is the basic requirement for all Civil Engineering projects. Modern surveying instruments such as total station and EDM, especially, provide faster and more precise surveying than conventional surveying instruments. Nowadays, most of the surveying work is carried out using modern types of equipment. However, the use of these types of equipment needs special training and skills. The main objective of this Workshop was to provide the technical skills for using these types of equipment. The Workshop was organized in collaboration with Lawrence & Mayo (India) Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, who is the leading supplier of surveying equipment in Bengaluru.
The Workshop began with the arrival of the dignitaries on the dais. The dignitaries present were Shri Rangaraju L A (Sales Manager, Lawrence & Mayo (India) Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru), Shri D R Munirao (Sales Manager Lawrence & Mayo (India) Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru), Dr. P Mahabaleswarappa (Principal, MVJCE), Dr. N Vetrivel (Head of Civil Engineering Department, MVJCE) and Prof. Muralidhara R (Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, MVJCE). The Master of Ceremony was Prof. Apoorva Kiran (Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, MVJCE). Dr. N Vetrivel delivered the welcome address, welcoming the Chief Guest, and introduced him to the gathering. He welcomed the Principal also. Prof. Muralidhara R delivered the Keynote of the Guest Speakers. Then, the opening remarks were given by the Principal, Dr. P Mahabaleswarappa.
Shri Rangaraju L A (Sales manager Lawrence & Mayo (India) Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru) then took over the session. He started by giving an overview of the importance of surveying in Civil Engineering constructions. He spoke about the advanced instruments in this modern field of surveying, and explained the use of total station in current Civil Engineering projects, how to setup the instrument in the field, shifting the instrument stations, and the advantages of total station in various projects such as canal alignment, highway alignment, tunnel alignment, water supply etc.
Immediately after the Keynote speech, practical sessions were given for the students. These sessions were on profile leveling, differential leveling, capacity contours, fly leveling, determining the coordinates, establishing bench marks, and a demo on the extraction of data from Total Station and Area computation.
Day 1 (28th December 2021): Around 42 students of 7th A and 7th Parallel were taken to the field for the Practical Sessions (10.30 am to 4 pm).
Day 2 (29th December 2021): Around 37 students of 7th B were taken to the field for the Practical Sessions (9.30 am to 3 pm).
Day 3 (30th December 2021): Around 55 students of 5th Semester were taken to the field for the Practical Sessions (9.30 am to 3 pm).
On 30th December 2021, Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. N Vetrivel, extending gratitude to the esteemed Key Speaker for an excellent Workshop session, to the Management of MVJCE for providing an opportunity to organize such events, to the Principal Dr. P Mahabaleswarappa and Vice Principal Dr. M Brindha for their constant support and encouragement, faculty of Civil Engineering Department and all the Civil Engineering students for their enthusiastic participation. He also thanked the IT helpdesk, non-teaching staff and technicians for their contribution.
